Lisa's Story

My name is Lisa Berkin, and thank you for taking the time to learn about Berkin Flowers. Like many endeavors, the path has been paved with challenges, successes, and personal growth.

My journey to Berkin Flowers began in 1996 when my husband, David, and I fell in love with our Main Street home. The big backyard was perfect for my gardening hobby and David's love for astronomy and birding. Having moved from our cramped quarters on Beacon Hill in Boston, our new home in Hingham with all its land was full of future dreams.

Shortly after moving to Hingham, we were blessed with two children, Jonah and Shira. I started my dream of cultivating gardens to attract pollinators, wildlife, and birds, which perfectly balanced David's love of nature and our desire to share that same love of nature with our children.

In 2004, gardening shifted from a hobby to being a refuge when David tragically passed away. David had always been the one to encourage my dreams, and for a long time, like others who have lost a loved one, I did what many do: I stopped dreaming and instead I mentally retracted and just tried to survive.

Gardening started as my refuge and then became an outlet for me to start extending myself out to the world by casually sharing arrangements with friends and local communities. Over time, people started encouraging me to make this into a business, and that's how my one-woman flower business began.

And during the last two decades, the business has grown from a very narrow focus on seasonal containers to a wide array of offerings including special event floristry, holiday wreaths, and subscription bouquets with most of the flowers being grown in my transformed backyard.

In 2020, my daughter Shira started working with me. It was a major moment in the journey as we eventually re-branded the business name to Berkin Flowers to accurately reflect the important contributions of Shira to the business. A lot of times as parents, we wonder what our kids are learning these days in college. Shira joining my business has been incredible as she has brought not just her creativity and artistry but also her business acumen. While the business began with the horror of losing my husband, it has transformed into the dream that many parents have of running a family business.

A few months ago, Shira gifted me a metal sign that now hangs in the flower farm entrance, right in the spot where David and I decided to buy the house. The sign reads "David's Garden." It’s a reminder that dreams never die if they are powerful. The wide array of flowers and animals that coexist in David's garden is an ongoing tribute to our shared love of nature.

For dreams to be realized, they require not just the will to take action on them but also the support of others as they are cultivated and grow into reality. Therefore, thank you for supporting our dream which has been almost two decades in the making. We are honored and excited to serve our local community, and we can’t wait to share our continual new offerings as we continue to evolve and grow in the future with you.

With gratitude,

Lisa
